Flying Dutchman Stable's BUNKER HILL

Flying Dutchman Stable's BUNKER HILL (Trippi) remained undefeated in  three starts with a head victory in the $100,600 Go for the Green Juvenile. Like  the Fairway, the Go for the Green was taken off the turf, but provided Bunker Hill with his second career stakes win. The Derek Ryan trainee captured the Continental Mile at Monmouth in his previous start, which was also taken off the turf. Bunker Hill boosted his earnings to $111,000 after completing 1 1/16 miles  in 1:48 1/5 under Rafael Mojica.

Bunker Hill Captures Stakes Race—Wins Continental Mile

Give “The Hill” Black type in his pedigree page, as the two year-old colt by Trippi notched his second win in as many career starts with a hard fought victory in the Continental Mile this past Saturday at Monmouth Park. Even though Bunker Hill went off as the fifth choice of a field of 8, trainer Derek Ryan was confident in the colt’s ability to perform in this spot. The race was originally scheduled for the turf but was moved to the main track due to heavy rain the night before.

With meet leading Jockey Jose Lezcano up Bunker Hill almost went wire to wire to win, but was challenged by and even briefly lost the lead to a game Uncle T Seven. Impressively, Bunker Hill won the stretch battle and nudged the second choice by a nose in a photo finish. With the victory Flying Dutchman Thorughbreds LLC can claim its first stake horse out of its syndicate program-which unlike other partnership plans breeds its own horses. The win actually makes Bunker Hill Trippi’s top two-year old of 2008 and gives FDT’s brood mare Never Yield a stake winner with her first foal.

Despite being pressed on the rail and bumped several times Lezcano was able to keep Bunker Hill focused and on course to victory, covering the mile in 1:39.43. Both horses outpaced the rest of the field by 4.5 lengths to third place finisher Aspiring Nick. Although the excitement is running high in the Dutchman camp over the early success of Bunker Hill the team plans to give very careful thought to the colts next steps. “Obviously we want to make sure the horse comes back sound and is healthy”, stated Ryan. “He seems to have plenty of fight in him and just likes to run—but as we always do will do our due diligence on his condition and possible future options”. This was Derek Ryan’s second stakes win of the meet.

Flying Dutchman Thoroughbred's 3 year old Bunker Hill came off a 4 month lay-off with an impressive race effort taking second by a neck to the once beaten Russell Road at Charlestown in the $100,000 Blue and Gold Stakes. It was the colts fourth straight stakes race in which he ran first or second.  The 89 beyer speed figure was the best of his career.  The second place finish pushed Bunker hill's lifetime earnings to $145,400 in just 5 starts.

Owners of Bunker Hill were thrilled beyond belief and had the experience of lifetime when following their colt down to Churchill Downs to run in the Grade III $150,000 American Turf Classic in front of 110,000 spectators on Kentucky Oaks Day.  FDT principal Rich Sorge noted, "this is what Horse Racing is all about. For our clients to get this thrill in just the sixt race of the horses career is something most owners will never get to experience.  We are proud of where we are and for the opportunity to run on one of the biggest weekends in North American Horse Racing."  Sorge also noted that trainer Derek Ryan also had a horse entered in the Kentucky Derby--Musket Man--who finished third by a nose to one of the pre-race favorites Pioneer of the Nile.  "Derek is big time now.  He will have Musket man heasded to the Preakness and hopefully the Haskell.  We tell people all the time that he is a big time trainer--between Musket and our Horse Bunker Hill, D. Ryan (as we call him) will start to get the respect that he deserves as a top notch trainer--we are super happy to have him in our camp".

Unfortunately for the members in Bunker Hill the race didn't pan out the way they wanted.  Bunker was certainly taken back by the large crowd in the paddock area, had a horrible gate experience, broke bad and just didn't take to the turf on his first effort on the service.  The good news is he came back healthy and is being pointed towards a stakes on May 30th at Monthmouth for $70,000 going a 1 1/16 on the dirt.  Trainer Derek Ryan pointed out," Today wasn't bunker's day, but the turf was in bad condition. We need only to point to the fact that a 45-1 shot won the race and that the pre-race favorite, Stormalory (a horse owned by Darley Stables) broke down and is out of racing for good.  We'll throw this one out and get back to business at the Monmouth meet".
